About Patreon

Patreon is the best place for creators to build community with their biggest fans, share exclusive work, and turn their passions into lasting creative businesses. Starting a Patreon is free for creators and their fans. If they want to start earning an income, they can choose to launch their own digital shop or run a paid membership. Here, creators get a direct line to their communities. That means they never have to worry about ads or algorithms getting in between them and the people who matter most.

Key Facts

In the digital age, creators often face significant challenges in monetizing their work due to the unpredictable nature of ad-based revenue models and the dominance of platforms that prioritize their own profits over content creators' earnings. Additionally, traditional publishing routes often require relinquishing some control over creative content, which can stifle artistic freedom. Creators also struggle to build stable, direct relationships with their audiences amid algorithms that can obscure their visibility. The need for consistent, reliable income streams and greater autonomy in content and community engagement is increasingly critical for creators across various media.

Patreon addresses these challenges by providing creators with a platform where they can establish direct, subscription-based relationships with their audience. This model allows for predictable, recurring income that isn’t dependent on ad revenue or algorithmic exposure. Creators retain full control over their content, free from the need to conform to external pressures from advertisers or publishers. Additionally, Patreon enables a closer connection with fans through exclusive content and interactive community features, helping creators build a loyal and engaged fanbase. This approach not only supports financial stability but also enhances creative freedom, allowing creators to focus on producing unique and authentic content tailored to their audience.

Patreon equips creators with the necessary tools to confidently connect with, engage, and monetize their most dedicated fans—both within and beyond traditional membership frameworks, at any stage of their creative journey. Creators maintain complete control over their direct relationships with their fans, while Patreon provides the resources needed for their continuous growth.

The Company offers services such as flexible payouts, business tools, education, app integrations, analytics, and insights.

A creator's Patreon serves as their online creative hub, where fans can discover their latest work, engage in community group chats, and explore digital products in their shop. Creators can effortlessly customize every element, from the background color to the organization and display of posts.

Starting on Patreon is free, and creators have the option to incorporate paid membership and commerce tools at any time when they feel it's the right moment to expand their business.

Members gain entry to the creator's community via new works, comments on accessible posts, and community chat spaces available through paid offerings. Members receive email notifications directly in their inbox, through the Patreon app, and on the website, ensuring they stay updated without missing any new content.

Adding paid offerings allows creators to transform their community into a sustainable business that provides financial support for their work.

By offering paid memberships, creators give their most devoted fans the chance to access exclusive content and perks through a recurring subscription. The billing schedule for these paid memberships can be chosen by the creators from various options provided by Patreon, enabling them to select the model that best suits their business needs.

Creators can also sell digital products like videos, podcast episodes, images, and other files directly to customers, regardless of their membership status, via Commerce.

Patreon’s commerce tools enable creators to offer digital products in their Shop tab, providing them with valuable insights into customer behavior and tracking their earnings growth over time.

The community chat feature is a space for group conversation among the creator’s Patreon community, helping them foster deeper connections among their members beyond the comment section.

Patreon's community chat feature is accessible to all creators with paid tiers, enabling them to establish up to 10 chat spaces for their paying members.

Patreon also offers a Partner Manager, a membership specialist who supports creators in expanding their business by offering insights and a direct channel of communication to the Patreon team.

Creators can view who joins their community and access member details such as join date, membership tier, and total amount paid through Patreon’s Relationship Manager.

Additionally, creators can analyze their overall growth and delve into specific data for free and paid members using filters available in Insights.

Patreon allows creators to withdraw their earnings whenever they choose, with options for monthly automatic payouts from their creator balance through direct deposit, PayPal, or Payoneer.

Patreon offers numerous integrations with platforms such as Discord, Vimeo, Zapier, and Wix, allowing creators to optimize their workflow and manage their communities more efficiently.

For members, Patreon provides a direct channel to join and interact with their favorite creator's community. It offers a dedicated space where they can access content from the creators they admire, free from the influence of algorithms.

If creators have paid memberships or sell digital products, members can directly purchase exclusive content, supporting the creators in producing more of the work they enjoy.

Patreon generates revenue by taking a percentage of the earnings from creators’ memberships. The platform offers a free version alongside two paid tiers: Pro and Premium.

The Pro tier, taking 8% of the income generated by the creator on Patreon, offers a core set of tools including membership tiers, engagement tools, and analytics. It also includes features for managing subscriptions, special offers, and customer support.

The Premium tier, which takes 12% of the income, builds on the Pro offerings with additional services like a dedicated partner manager, team accounts, and merchandising options for memberships.

Both tiers are subject to additional fees for payment processing, currency conversion, payouts, and applicable taxes, emphasizing a comprehensive suite of tools to support creators in monetizing their content and growing their creative businesses.

According to The Information in January 2023, Patreon’s revenue amounted to between $75 million and $180 million in 2022, depending on the plans that creators choose.

In August 2023, Patreon announced its partnership with Spotify to help podcasters grow their audience, engage with fans, and earn more income. This new partnership helps all podcasters grow their audiences with discovery on Spotify, bring more engaged fans into their Patreon communities, and earn income beyond ad revenue. With this partnership, fans now have the ability to tune in to Patreon-exclusive podcasts directly on Spotify.

In October 2023, Patreon acquired Moment, allowing creators to offer memorable digital experiences for their fans. With Moment, Patreon is bringing creators one more way to share their art with their biggest fans through ticketed digital experiences. Moment is the number one digital events platform for artists and creators, including Justin Bieber, Tame Impala, Kygo, Pod Save America, Good For You Podcast with Whitney Cummings, and many more. “Patreon’s mission has always been to help creators take control over their work, deepen connections with their most passionate fans, and build successful, sustainable businesses,” said Jack Conte, Co-Founder & CEO of Patreon. “On the heels of releasing our new brand identity, mobile app, and a suite of creator tools, joining forces with Moment will further strengthen Patreon’s offerings for creators.”

In October 2023, Patreon introduced a reimagined Patreon with community chats, Commerce, a completely redesigned mobile app, and a new brand identity. Central to this rebranding effort is the launch of community chats and a new feature called Commerce. This addition enables creators to sell individual content items such as videos, audio tracks, and downloadable files to anyone, whether they are members or not. Additionally, the rebrand features a vibrant new logo and wordmark, showcasing modern typography, colors, and photographic styles. The revamped branding is characterized as a "motion-first brand for a digital-first world," designed to defy conventional media branding norms.

In March 2024, Patreon ranked #5 on Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies in Social Media list for 2024.
