On September 20, 2024, Anthropic introduced a new AI technique called 'Contextual Retrieval,' aimed at significantly enhancing AI interactions. This method integrates two sub-techniques: Contextual Embeddings and Contextual BM25, which together reduce the number of failed retrievals by 49% individually and by 67% when combined with reranking. This improvement in retrieval accuracy is expected to boost performance in various downstream tasks. To facilitate the adoption of these techniques, Anthropic has also released a cookbook that provides developers with guidance on deploying their own Contextual Retrieval solutions using Claude.
