iTrustCapital is the leading self-directed digital IRA platform for individual investors. With a focus on innovation and customer service, the company provides a user-friendly technology interface and 24/7 transacting, allowing clients to easily access alternative assets such as physical gold, silver, cryptocurrencies, and others. The company is on a mission to inspire millions of working professionals to participate in their retirement planning journey and revolutionize the way in which fintech platforms deliver an extraordinary client experience - from onboarding and account security to live-phone support - with trust, transparency, and integrity at the core of everything it does.
As blockchain technology, Web-3 applications, and Decentralized Finance (DeFi) continue to evolve, a significant number of investors are keen to capitalize on these burgeoning sectors and asset classes. Despite this, there's a noticeable absence of tax-advantaged digital asset investment accounts that would enable investors to partake in this technology while enjoying the benefits associated with IRAs. Currently, the primary mode of investment is through major cryptocurrency exchanges like Coinbase and Binance, which do not offer tax-advantaged investing options through retirement accounts.
iTrustCapital empowers and provides secure access to millions of investors who would like to participate in the economic growth that a blockchain future holds, leveraging a low-cost, user-friendly software platform to buy and sell cryptocurrencies and precious metals in real-time, 24/7, through their tax-advantaged individual retirement accounts (IRAs).
iTrustCapital's software platform is accessible to all eligible investors based in the United States (with the exception of New York and Hawaii). In collaboration with its partners, the platform currently supports transactions in 33 Cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP, as well as various DeFi projects and layer-1 protocols, in addition to physical gold and silver. The platform regularly expands its range of digital assets to cater to the evolving needs and interests of its clients.
iTrustCapital provides settlement, secure storage/custody of assets, IRS tax reporting, compliance, seamless onboarding and facilitation of IRA transfer, rollover, or contribution, platform maintenance, ongoing regulatory compliance, and excellent client service.
Several improvements to iTrustCapital’s product offerings have contributed to lowering the barrier for entry into the self-directed crypto IRA space, including decreasing the contribution amount to open an account from $2,500 to $1,000, and eliminating monthly service fees.
In addition to increased transaction volume, iTrustCapital has also experienced a significant uptick in newly funded client accounts in 2022, resulting in increased transaction activity and overall usage on the platform. During this period, newly funded accounts grew 61%, from 25,000 to more than 40,000.
Given the long-term outlook and tax advantages of IRAs, iTrustCapital has a very sticky customer base with hardly any customer churn. Customers routinely deposit cash to existing accounts and continue to roll over additional IRAs.
iTrustCapital never takes custody of users’ assets. They don't borrow or lend against client assets or leverage client assets for profit, and they don't let their custody providers do it either.
iTrustCapital utilizes a third-party custodian, Fortress Trust, for custody of client assets. Fortress Trust is a regulated state-chartered trust company. As a custodian, it holds client assets in individual retirement accounts solely for the benefit of each client. Fortress utilizes proprietary technology to custody digital assets, including Fireblocks.
Fortress Trust utilizes an FDIC-insured bank to deposit its clients' USD. Deposit accounts are insured up to the maximum permitted by federal regulation.
In the event that iTrustCapital and/or its custodian was to go out of business, Fortress Trust and iTrustCapital maintain a business continuity plan to address business wind-down and account transitions if needed. If a wind-down is required, clients would retain ownership and control of their accounts and assets and would be required to transfer their funds to another custodian. Client assets are never mixed with operating funds and therefore are not available to satisfy the obligations of iTrustCapital or its custodian.
iTrustCapital is a software platform that allows clients to buy and sell cryptocurrency and precious metals in their Self-Directed IRA. iTrustCapital is not an exchange, custodian, trust company, licensed broker/dealer, or investment advisor, and therefore is not directly regulated as such.
“We are equally excited to partner with iTrustCapital to help support their mission to provide access to cryptocurrency and other alternative investment products through self-directed IRAs. We were impressed by iTrustCapital’s lean, focused approach, world-class management team, significant revenue growth, and strong reputation in the crypto IRA ecosystem” said Left Lane’s Matthew Miller, who is joining the company’s Board of Directors.
The minimum to open an iTrustCapital account is $1,000. The maximum to fund an account is based on IRS limitations for cash contributions. There is no maximum for IRA Transfers or Qualified Plan Rollovers.
iTrustCapital generates revenue through the following fees: (1) 1% buy & sell cryptocurrency transaction fee, (2) $50 over spot per ounce gold transaction fee, (3) $2.50 over spot per ounce silver transaction fee, (4) One-time fee of $75 to convert a Traditional IRA to a SEP IRA or Roth IRA.
According to the Los Angeles Business Journal, in the first year the service launched in 2019, the company generated approximately $14,000 in revenue. In 2020, that number jumped to $3 million, and in 2021, it increased to just shy of $50 million in revenue. “We bootstrapped ourselves into the position as the industry leader by focusing on having the best product with excellent client service — and thus grew organically within the crypto community,” said former CEO Todd Southwick.
In June 2022, iTrustCapital introduced Conditional Transactions as an added feature for its users. Conditional Transactions allow clients to set price conditions above or below current market prices under which a market order will be executed to enter/exit positions automatically if an asset reaches the desired market price. Conditional Transactions on the iTrustCapital platform offer users the ability to execute transactions automatically when price parameters are met.
In August 2022, USC Athletics and iTrustCapital formed a partnership, making iTrustCapital the official crypto platform of the USC Trojans. As part of this sponsorship, iTrustCapital will have a strong presence through banners, on-site activations, and additional advertisements for the football and basketball seasons. Additionally, custom signs will be displayed in and around the iconic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the home of USC's football team, and the Galen Center, host to Trojan home basketball games. iTrustCapital will hold special fan-centric events and promotional activities both before and after many events throughout the football and basketball seasons.
In August 2022, iTrustCapital announced that it had reached $6 billion in total transaction volume. This growth represents a 200% increase after tipping $2 billion in transaction volume in July of 2021. Notably, August 2022 was on track to be the highest average initial funding month of the year thus far. In addition to transaction volume, the company had also experienced a significant uptick in newly funded client accounts over the prior eight months, resulting in increased transaction activity and overall usage on the platform. During this period, newly funded accounts grew 61%, from 25,000 to more than 40,000. Interim CEO and Chief Strategy Officer, Kevin Maloney, attributes this milestone to iTrustCapital’s latest product offerings. “Despite the crypto bear market in the first half of this year, our team has worked diligently to continually enhance our platform with a goal of improving user experience and customer engagement. Our highly focused marketing efforts, valuable client feedback, and deep alignment with the crypto community have certainly catalyzed this milestone,” said Kevin Maloney.
In April 2023, iTrustCapital announced its strategic partnership and integration with Fortress Trust Company based in Summerlin, Nevada. Fortress is a technology-driven financial institution that, as a regulated qualified custodian, specializes in the custody of alternative assets including cryptocurrencies, private securities, real estate, precious metals, and other asset classes. This integration with Fortress Trust is intended to bring vastly improved client onboarding processes alongside numerous new features and benefits including a streamlined account-opening experience coupled with strong safety and soundness. Expected benefits of the integration include instant and nearly frictionless Know Your Customer (KYC) processing during onboarding, expanded availability nationwide and globally, increased digital asset options, continued availability of physical precious metals such as gold and silver, and upcoming availability of additional alternative assets such as fractional real estate, private equity and interest-earning cash sweeps on FBO client USD positions. Additionally, iTrustCapital clients will have the ability to set up recurring contributions and dollar-cost averaging.
