About Postman

Postman is the world’s leading API (application-programming interface) platform, used by more than 30 million developers and 500,000 organizations, including 98% of the Fortune 500. Postman is helping developers and professionals across the globe build the API-first world by simplifying each step of the API lifecycle and streamlining collaboration—enabling users to create better APIs, faster. The company is headquartered in San Francisco and has offices in Bangalore, where it was founded, and Tokyo.

Key Facts

APIs (application programming interfaces) are the building blocks of modern software. Every software application today is either an API or uses an API, a type of software intermediary that allows software programs to communicate with each other.

APIs simplify the integration and management of existing platforms and power the interconnectedness of technology people use every day.

Traditionally, developing and managing APIs involved various complex tasks such as manual testing, documentation, monitoring, and collaboration among team members. It required rigorous testing for functionality, reliability, and performance, alongside integration of analytics, monitoring, and security measures. Comprehensive documentation was also crucial for effective usage and integration, ensuring seamless operation.

Postman addresses the challenges associated with API development and management, making the process more accessible, efficient, and reliable for developers and organizations.

Postman provides a unified platform that allows developers to design, test, document, and monitor APIs in a more efficient and organized manner. Postman simplifies each step of the API lifecycle and streamlines collaboration so users can create better APIs—faster.

Postman’s platform offers features like automated testing, real-time collaboration, detailed documentation, and monitoring capabilities, thereby enabling developers to save time, reduce errors, and improve the quality and performance of their APIs.

Postman's API repository offers a cloud-based, version-controlled solution for storing all API artifacts. It facilitates streamlined governance, metrics gathering, and insights generation. Users can access it via desktop and web applications, organizing and scaling their API lifecycle seamlessly across personal, team, partner, or public workspaces.

Postman's API Builder helps users easily implement an API design workflow through specifications like OpenAPI, GraphQL, or RAML. The API Builder enables users to manage the API lifecycle from design to deployment and integrate with a variety of source control, CI/CD, gateways, and APM solutions—all in one place.

The Postman platform includes a comprehensive set of tools that help accelerate the API lifecycle—from design, testing, documentation, and mocking to the sharing and discoverability of APIs.

The Postman API client is the foundational tool of Postman, and it enables users to easily explore, debug, and test their APIs while also enabling them to define complex API requests for HTTP, REST, SOAP, GraphQL, and WebSockets.

Postman enables the design of API specifications using various formats such as OpenAPI, RAML, GraphQL, or SOAP. Its schema editor supports specifications of any size and provides validation through an integrated linting engine.

Postman's automatic documentation seamlessly integrates into developers' API workflows, making documentation an essential and effortless aspect of the process.

Postman empowers users to create and execute API tests directly within the platform or as part of continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines through Newman, a Collection Runner for command-line execution.

Postman workspaces help users organize their API work and collaborate across their organization or the world. There are four different kinds of Postman workspaces for different needs: personal, team, partner, and public workspaces.

Personal workspaces cater to individual-focused tasks and ensure synchronization across various Postman instances and versions. Users can maintain privacy by restricting access to APIs, collections, and other elements within private workspaces.

Partner workspaces facilitate collaboration with external partners on product and service development using APIs. These shared, secure spaces offer real-time updates and notifications on API changes, ensuring effective collaboration.

Public workspaces enable the sharing of APIs with the global community. They are searchable and accessible through the Postman Public API Network, facilitating feedback collection, developer onboarding, and showcasing of API projects.

Team workspaces foster collaboration among team members within a shared environment. Access control and version history features ensure secure collaboration, allowing team members to comment on, use, modify, and fork existing elements.

Postman boasts over 30 integrations spanning development, testing, monitoring, visualization, and documentation categories. These integrations seamlessly connect Postman to users' API workflows, incorporating support for popular third-party solutions. Furthermore, the Postman API and open-source technologies provide extensibility and customization options, facilitating integration with diverse development environments.

Postman operates primarily on a freemium business model, offering a basic service for free with the option for organizations to access additional features and functionality through paid plans: (1) Basic ($14/month), (2) Professional ($29/month), and (3) Enterprise (customized rate/month).

Postman’s model allows customers to choose the plan that best fits their needs. The plans continuously offer more API calls, custom domains, private API networks, integrations, API testing, API governance/security, reporting and analytics, deployment control, identity and access management, and automated provisioning and de-provisioning via SCIM.

According to Postman’s 2023 State of the API Report, 121 million collections have been created since inception and 1.29 billion requests have been created on the Postman API Platform in the past year alone.

Postman’s user base of over 30 million represents a massive market that may hold significant upselling opportunities.

In July 2023, Postman announced that it acquired Akita Software, the company that makes monitoring and observing system behavior accessible for every developer. This is Postman’s first strategic acquisition since unveiling its vision of empowering 100 million software builders through APIs. Postman will integrate Akita’s API discovery and monitoring capabilities into its platform to deliver tooling to help organizations thrive in an API-first world.

In September 2023, Postman announced that it won the 2023 API Award for “Best in API Management.” The API Awards is an annual program honoring technical innovation and standout solutions adopted by the global API and integration community.

In December 2023, Postman announced the launch of its Japan subsidiary, Postman K.K., to strengthen support for API professionals locally. Postman’s Japan presence will serve over 400,000 developers and 82 percent of the Nikkei 225 index already using Postman.

In April 2024, Postman announced its acquisition of Orbit, the community growth platform for developer companies. Over the past four years, Orbit has helped the leading developer companies grow their communities, and will now integrate its technology and deploy its expertise in support of Postman’s vision of empowering 100 million developers through API collaboration. “Tens of thousands of API builders including companies like Discord already distribute their APIs to millions of developers on the Postman API Network. But today, those builders can’t engage directly with their community on the network,” said Abhinav Asthana, co-founder and CEO of Postman. “We can show them how many developers call their APIs along with success rates, which is only part of the experience. With Orbit, we'll open up the conversation between API builders and developers, allowing developers to tell API builders what they need, and enabling API builders to reach new audiences.”
