Unstoppable Domains is an NFT domain name provider and digital identity platform working to onboard the world onto Web3. Unstoppable Domains offers NFT domains minted on the blockchain that give people full ownership and control of their digital identity, with no renewal fees. With Unstoppable Domains, people can replace lengthy alphanumeric crypto wallet addresses with a human-readable name and log into and transact with apps, wallets, exchanges and marketplaces. Unstoppable Domains believes “NFT domains will be as ubiquitous as email, giving people an identity across web3 that they own and control.”
Historically, people have built their online identities around Web2 companies that use people’s data for profit. Unstoppable Domains believes NFT domains have the power to change this, providing infrastructure that allows people to own their reputation and data, and make it portable across web3.
Beyond giving users ownership and control over their digital identities, NFT domains separate personal identities from wallet addresses. In current transactions for cryptocurrency or nonfungible tokens (NFTs), wallet addresses serve as users’ identifiers, combining personal and financial information that increases vulnerability to scams.
A NFT domain serves as the user’s personal address across blockchain-based applications, hosting whatever personal information the owner wishes to disclose.
Unstoppable Domains offers NFT domains that give people full ownership and control of their digital identity. The platform, which includes members who worked at companies such as Amazon’s AWS, Uber, and Slack, mints each decentralized domain name as an NFT on the blockchain to give the owner broader control and ownership.
Unstoppable Domains solves two critical challenges: 1) simplifying an individual user’s Web3 digital identity by connecting numerous services (login, payments / commerce, messaging, verifications) to one universal, human-readable domain and 2) enabling owners to easily create and host websites without the need for traditional intermediaries in the Web2 Domain Name System (DNS) such as registries and registrars that charge renewal fees.
When Unstoppable Domains first started offering NFT domains, their key use case was replacing complex wallet names with human-identifiable domain names. As the business expanded, Unstoppable Domains started to integrate additional use cases such as creating and browsing decentralized websites.
The websites leverage the decentralized storage network, InterPlanetary File System, for data storage. The websites are accessible natively through Brave and Opera browsers.
In January 2022, Unstoppable Domains introduced Login with Unstoppable – users can use their unique NFT domain as a username to access 210+ apps, games and metaverses (no password required). According to the Block, Login with Unstoppable allows owners of Unstoppable Domains on Ethereum or Polygon to log in and share profile information with applications. This gives users more control over their own information and allows application developers to learn about their users without needing to host or maintain their own CRM database.
With Login with Unstoppable, users maintain absolute control over login credentials as sharing personal information is 100% opt-in (including metadata and proof of ownership). Similar to how web2 giants profit from selling user personal data to data brokers and advertisers, users can choose to share data directly with dApps, brands and services in exchange for something of value.
Over 150 DApps support the Company’s Login with Unstoppable product, addressing one of the painful experiences plaguing the crypto community.
After releasing Login with Unstoppable, Unstoppable Domains focused on developing a digital identity that can be used across the Web3 ecosystem. On the ud.me profile page, users can set Web3 profile pictures with their NFTs and verify/link other social profiles to the domain. Unstoppable Domains profiles support NFT avatars minted on Polygon, Binance, Avalanche, and Fantom. Users can earn badges that show achievements such as what NFT projects they’re involved in, how many domains they’ve collected, what cryptos they hold and more.
The ability for users to connect multiple services to their NFT domain such as login, payments, crypto transfers, messaging, verifications and more reduces the risk of losses from human error and makes Web3 more approachable for everyone.
The company has registered over 2.6 million domains, which people can use to log into more than 150 Web3 applications, replace lengthy crypto wallet addresses on more than 80 wallets and exchanges, create decentralized websites, and build their web3 identity.
Unstoppable Domains largely relies on a partner-driven go-to-market strategy to expand its user base, providing infrastructure and custodial services to the NFT domains that can be used in over 300 applications with leading web3 companies like Polygon, Blockchain.com, MoonPay, OpenSea, Coinbase, Rainbow, Chainlink, Brave and more.
Expansion through partnerships is an integral part of Unstoppable Domains’ growth strategy. Domain names don’t work inside of apps by default, so Unstoppable Domains needs to convince apps to support its identity standard.
Through the Company’s partnerships, Unstoppable has 10 different top-level domains, including .crypto, .coin, .bitcoin, .nft, .dao, and .blockchain. With each new partnership, users are able to decide what on-chain and off-chain data is displayed across different apps.
Unstoppable Domains' current revenue stream comes from domain sales. While traditional domains require yearly subscriptions, Unstoppable charges a one-time fee that starts at $5 per domain—users can purchase their domains through crypto payments, credit card payments, and PayPal. Once the user purchases and claims an NFT domain, the user gets 100% ownership of that domain forever with no renewal fees.
A wallet is not necessary for the domain purchase, as NFT domains can be minted any time after the purchase is made. Like other NFTs, these usernames can be traded on secondary markets. Unstoppable Domains’ customers pay $0 gas fees to mint their NFT domains and can choose where they want to custody their domains.
Additional revenue streams in the future can be custody services (a way for users to back up their domain name in case the domain name is lost) and email messaging services associated with the domain name.
Unstoppable Domains experienced a year of explosive growth as of July 2021 – in just over a year, Unstoppable Domains was able to double its cumulative sales and domain registration figures. The team also rolled out 100+ product features and improvements in 2021. As of August 2022, Unstoppable Domains had generated more than $87 million in sales since launching in 2019.
For the next 12 months, Unstoppable Domains is focused on creating more utility for its NFT domains and building more integrations with apps, dApps, games, and metaverses. The team is working on expanding app integration from hundreds to thousands of apps and enabling users to share more information across various apps.
Unstoppable Domains and its partners are exploring new ways users can access unique experiences and rewards from apps. Another key area of development is transforming Login with Unstoppable to become a fully decentralized solution, creating an easy way for users to manage their own servers and have full control over their digital identity.
Unstoppable Domains has been working to make blockchain gaming a new seamless experience for both web3 novices and crypto natives alike. The Company’s giving extra utility to its gaming partners (from Learn-to-Earn platforms to metaverses) by letting players use their domains for seamless login vs traditional wallet-connection options, managing NFT inventories, and displaying their NFT Domain as their player name.
In October 2021, Unstoppable Domains partnered with 32 wallets (~40 million users) to launch The .Wallet Alliance. The goal of this alliance was to establish a new global standard for peer-to-peer crypto transactions using Unstoppable Domains’ .wallet NFT domains.
In December 2021, Unstoppable Domains and Alchemy partnered to launch an API for domain name integrations. This API makes it easy for apps to support NFT domains and Alchemy's future-proof technology ensures companies using this API won't have to update their code as Unstoppable Domains expands.
In August 2022, Unstoppable Domains introduced the new Unstoppable iOS app, creating a simple and intuitive way to manage your Web3 identity on the go. Within the app, you can now mint, backup and manage your domains on the go, build a profile card to share your digital identity on social media and in real life, and log in to 180+ apps, metaverses, and games that have integrated Login with Unstoppable and hundreds of other WalletConnect compatible apps.
In August 2022, Unstoppable Domains announced an integration with Ramp Network to let their members have even more control over their data, with easier crypto transactions that replace complicated wallet addresses with human-readable ones. UD's domain resolution will make each Ramp member benefit from a simpler user experience, allowing them to send & receive 40 coins & tokens across 27 blockchains via NFT domain names.
In September 2022, the Company announced that more than 2 million Unstoppable domains can now be used to display decentralized websites in Brave, a secure and privacy-centric browser that allows you to explore the Internet without being tracked. Through the Unstoppable Domains integration with Brave, creators can build decentralized content with a domain that they fully own and control – or explore the nearly 30,000 websites and counting that have been created using an Unstoppable domain.
Unstoppable Domains is a fully remote company and was recently named one of America's Best Startup Employers by Forbes in 2022.
